About

BalconySprout is about making balcony gardening a little easier.

A plant that thrives on one balcony might struggle on another. Sun, shade, wind, summer heat, container size, and even the amount of time you have for watering can completely change what will grow well.

That’s why the guides here are built around real balcony conditions rather than one-size-fits-all plant lists.

Who BalconySprout is for

This site is for anyone trying to grow something in a limited outdoor space, whether that’s an apartment balcony, condo balcony, townhouse deck, or a small balcony at home.

Some balconies get hours of direct sun. Others barely see it. Some are sheltered, while others deal with strong wind almost every day.

The goal is to help you figure out what works for the space you actually have.

What you’ll find here

BalconySprout covers topics such as choosing plants for sunny or shady balconies, growing in containers, dealing with wind and heat, watering, drainage, potting mixes, seasonal care, and making better use of small spaces.

You’ll also find guides to vegetables, herbs, flowers, and other plants that can work well in containers.

Most of the site currently focuses on growing conditions in the United States. Metric measurements and regional notes are included where they’re helpful.
