Editorial Policy

BalconySprout is built around one simple idea: gardening advice should fit the conditions people are actually growing in.

That means looking at things like sunlight, wind, heat, container size, climate, and the limits of the space before making recommendations.

How we research our guides

We use reliable gardening and horticultural sources to check important information before publishing.

Depending on the topic, that may include university extension programs, government agriculture resources, botanical gardens, horticultural organizations, research papers, established seed companies, and trusted plant-safety databases.

We give more weight to those sources than to general gardening blogs or product pages.

When a guide relies heavily on outside research, the main references are included in a Sources section at the end of the article.

Some topics need extra care. Information involving balcony weight, railings, drainage, pesticides, or plant toxicity is checked closely before publication.

Gardening also varies by location. When climate, local rules, or the design of a particular building can change the answer, we try to make that clear rather than present one recommendation as universal.

Who writes BalconySprout

Articles are published under the name Maya at BalconySprout.

Maya has studied horticulture and continues to study plant sciences, with practical experience in garden-center and community-garden settings.

You can read more about the site on our About page.

If an article is reviewed by a specialist, that reviewer will be named on the article.

Photos and graphics

We use photographs and graphics to make the guides easier to understand.

Photographs come from licensed, commissioned, or otherwise properly sourced material.

Illustrations and diagrams are used when they explain something more clearly than a photograph can, especially for topics such as planter placement, light, drainage, or balcony layout.

Images are there to support the guide, not to replace the research behind it.

Recommendations and safety

We try to keep recommendations practical and within the limits of what a gardening guide can reasonably answer.

For example, we can explain how container weight adds up, but we cannot tell a reader exactly how much weight a particular balcony can support. That depends on the building itself.

The same applies to building rules, attachments, railings, drainage, pesticides, pet safety, and other situations where local conditions matter.

When there is a meaningful safety consideration, we would rather point that out than make assumptions.

Updates and corrections

Gardening information changes, products change, and sometimes an article simply needs improving.

When we make a substantial update to a guide, we update its modified date.

If you notice something that looks incorrect or unclear, you can let us know through the contact page. Including the URL of the article helps us find it quickly.

Before using a guide

Every balcony is different.

Before adding heavy containers, attaching anything to a railing, changing drainage, or making other significant changes, check your building or rental rules and confirm anything you are unsure about with the appropriate person.

For plant choices and seasonal advice, local climate will always matter too.
