New to balcony gardening? Start by reading the space itself. This page shows what to measure before buying plants and points you to the guide that fits the result.
What a balcony garden can be
A few well-chosen containers can supply herbs, seasonal greens, compact vegetables, flowers, or a useful privacy screen. The goal is not to imitate a backyard. It is to choose a garden your balcony can carry and you can maintain.
Before buying anything: four checks
1. Measure the direct light
On a clear day, note when direct sun reaches each place a pot could sit. Count direct sun rather than general brightness. Use the sunlight test if you need a simple record sheet.
2. Check rules and weight
Read the lease, strata, HOA, or building rules for planters, screens, runoff, and permanent attachments. Wet potting mix is heavy. Keep the setup conservative, and confirm unusually large containers or concentrated loads with the building.
3. Find the wind path
Watch where gusts enter and where the wall or railing creates shelter. Wind dries containers quickly and can turn tall plants or loose hardware into hazards. For an exposed space, begin with the wind-resistant balcony guide.
4. Plan watering and drainage
Know how far the nearest tap is, where excess water will collect, and how often you can check the pots during hot weather. Containers need drainage holes, but runoff must not reach a neighbour’s space.
